Re: Scripture of the Day

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY [Saturday]

Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.  Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.  2 Timothy 2:18 – 19  [authorized King James Bible; AV]

A similar situation arose some 1,500 years later in the apostle Paul’s day.  Certain professed Christians adopted false teachings; yet, they continued to associate with the congregation.  To the casual observer, these apostates might not have been different from others in the congregation.  But their apostasy presented a danger to faithful Christians.  These wolves in sheep’s clothing began “subverting the faith of some.”   Jehovah is no casual observer, however, and Paul would have known this from the way God handled the situation with the rebels—Korah and his supporters—centuries earlier. In this regard, let us consider an intriguing passage of Scripture and see what practical lessons we can learn from it. (Numbers 16:35, and Numbers 26:10)

Re: Scripture of the Day

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY [Sunday]

but if any man loveth God, the same is known by him.  1 Corinthians 8:3  [American Standard Version: AVS]

Numbers 16:1 – 11 clearly shows how some can delude themselves, let’s look at it, “Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men:  and they rose up before Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty princes of the congregation, called to the assembly, men of renown;  and they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them, Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and Jehovah is among them: wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the assembly of Jehovah?  And when Moses heard it, he fell upon his face:  and he spake unto Korah and unto all his company, saying, In the morning Jehovah will show who are his, and who is holy, and will cause him to come near unto him: even him whom he shall choose will he cause to come near unto him.  This do: take you censers, Korah, and all his company;  and put fire in them, and put incense upon them before Jehovah to–morrow: and it shall be that the man whom Jehovah doth choose, he shall be holy: ye take too much upon you, ye sons of Levi.  And Moses said unto Korah, Hear now, ye sons of Levi:  seemeth it but a small thing unto you, that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself, to do the service of the tabernacle of Jehovah, and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them;  and that he hath brought thee near, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee? and seek ye the priesthood also?    Therefore thou and all thy company are gathered together against Jehovah: and Aaron, what is he that ye murmur against him?” [ASV] They had deluded themselves into thinking that God would accept their worship. But such an expectation was insulting to Jehovah, who can read hearts and could see their hypocrisy.—Jer. 17:10.

Appropriately, the day before, Moses had predicted, that in the morning Jehovah will make known who belongs to him.  Sure enough, Jehovah differentiated between genuine worshippers and counterfeit ones when  “And fire came forth from Jehovah, and devoured the two hundred and fifty men that offered the incense.”  (Numbers 16:35,  [ASV] )  And, and the earth opened its mouth, and swallowed them up together with Korah, when that company died; what time the fire devoured two hundred and fifty men, and they became a sign.“ (Numbers 26:10,  [ASV])   At the same time, Jehovah spared the life of Aaron, signaling approval of the real  priest and genuine worshipper of God.

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY [Tuesday]

The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.  Psalms 33:11  [authorized King James Bible; AV]

Jehovah’s lofty principles are unshakable.  “The decisions of Jehovah will stand forever, as shown in Psalms33:11 above.   Other scriptures speak of Jehovah’s rulership, loyal love, righteousness, and faithfulness as enduring forever. (Ex. 15:18; Ps. 106:1; 112:9;117:2) Malachi 3:6 says: “For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.”   [AV]   Similarly, James 1:17 states that  Jehovah “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. [AV]

Re: Scripture of the Day

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY [Wednesday]

And he spake unto Korah and unto all his company, saying, Even to morrow the LORD will shew who are his, and who is holy; and will cause him to come near unto him: even him whom he hath chosen will he cause to come near unto him.  2 Timothy 2:19  [New World Translation Revised; NWTR]

Paul’s word picture recorded at 2 Timothy 2:19 depicts a foundation with a message on it, as if imprinted with a seal.  In ancient times, it was not uncommon to display an inscription on a building’s foundation, perhaps showing who built it or who owned it.  Paul was the first Bible writer to use this particular illustration.      The seal on  the solid foundation of God  has two pronouncements. First, Jehovah knows those who belong to him and second, Let everyone calling on the name of Jehovah renounce unrighteousness.

What lesson can we learn from the “seal” in Paul’s word picture?   For those who belong to God, Jehovah’s values and principles can be summed up in two fundamental truths: (1) Jehovah loves those who are loyal to him, and (2) Jehovah hates unrighteousness. How is this lesson relevant to the issue of apostasy within the congregation?

Re: Scripture of the Day

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY [Thursday]

And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.  Matthew 22:39  (Authorized King James Bible; AV)

If we follow the Bible’s counsel, we will always love our neighbor as we love ourselves.   Jehovah and Jesus expect us to do this.   We must love all people, no matter where they come from or what their culture is.   Whenever it is difficult to show love for our neighbor, we can pray to Jehovah and ask for his holy spirit. We know this will please Jehovah, and he will help us.—Romans 8:26, 27.
We should love all people, no matter where they come from or what their culture is.

The command to love our neighbor is so important that it is called “… the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:” (James 2:8,  [AV])   In the Mosaic Law, Jehovah gave his people many commandments that taught them to love their neighbor. Later, Jehovah inspired Paul to write: “Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.   For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.  Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law..’”—Romans 13:8-10,  [AV] .

Re: Scripture of the Day

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY [Saturday]

Because I will publish the name of the LORD: ascribe ye greatness unto our God.  He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.  Deuteronomy 32:3 – 4  (Authorized King James Bible; AV)

Jehovah’s justice, like every other facet of his matchless personality, is perfect, not lacking in anything.   Every expression of Jehovah’s justice is flawless—never too lenient, never too harsh.
There is a close connection between Jehovah’s justice and his mercy. Psalm 116:5 says: “Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; yea, our God is merciful;” [AV]  and our God is One showing mercy. Yes, Jehovah is both just and merciful.   The two traits are not at odds. His exercising of mercy is not a watering down of his justice, as if his justice would otherwise be too severe.   Rather, the two qualities are often expressed by him at the same time, even in the same act. Consider an example.

All humans are by inheritance sinful and thus deserving of sin’s penalty—death. (Romans 5:12) But Jehovah finds no pleasure in the death of sinners. He is “…thou art a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and forsookest them not.” (Nehemiah 9:17,  [AV])  Still, because he is holy, he cannot condone unrighteousness.   How, then, could he show mercy to inherently sinful humans?   The answer is found in one of the most precious truths of God’s Word: Jehovah’s provision of a ransom for mankind’s salvation.   By means of it, Jehovah can express tender mercy toward repentant sinners  while maintaining his standards of perfect justice.—Romans 3:21-26.  .

Re: Scripture of the Day

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY [Sunday]

God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.  John 4:24  (Authorized King James Bible; AV)

As Almighty God (YHWH) is a spirit, we can not see him.   Yet, love for Almighty God (YHWH) is possible, and we are commanded in the Scriptures to express that love.  For example, Moses told the Israelites: “And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might..”—Deuteronomy 6:5,  [AV].

Why can we have deep love for Almighty God (YHWH)?   Because he created us with a spiritual need and endowed us with the ability to express love. When our spiritual need is properly satisfied, our love for Almighty God (YHWH) grows and we have a sound basis for happiness, as Jesus said,  “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matt. 5:3,  [AV])   Concerning what some call humans’ innate desire to worship, it has been said: “We should stand in awe, amazement and reverence to see the universality of man’s search for, and belief in, a supreme being.”—Man Does Not Stand Alone, by Abraham C. Morrison, 1944.

Re: Scripture of the Day

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY [Monday]

But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.  Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,  Master, which is the great commandment in the law?  Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.  This is the first and great commandment.  Matthew 22:34 – 38, (Authorized King James Bible; AV)

Our love for Jehovah should spring from the heart.   Jesus made that clear when a Pharisee asked him which was the greatest commandment.

What did Jesus mean when he said that we must love God with our “whole heart”? He meant that we must love Jehovah with our entire figurative heart, affecting our desires, emotions, and feelings. We must also love him with our “whole soul,” or our life and being. Moreover, we must love God with our “whole mind,” or our full intellect. In essence, we ought to love Jehovah fully, without reservation.
