SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY [for Thursday]
But Jehovah said to him: “Peace be with you. Have no fear; you will not die.” 24 So Gid?e·on built an altar there to Jehovah, and it is called Je·ho?vah-sha?lom down to this day. It is still in Oph?rah of the Abi-ez?rites. Judges 6:23 – 24, [New World Translation Revised: NWTr]
Almighty God (YHWH) backed up Judge Gideon during a very troublesome time in ancient Israel after they had entered the promise land [now the land of Palestine]. An angel visited him at this time when the neighboring Midianites were a real threat to Israel. For that reason, Gideon was threshing wheat, not in the open field, but in a winepress, where he could quickly hide the valuable grain. Surprised that the angel appeared and addressed him as a “mighty warrior,” Gideon questioned whether Jehovah, who had delivered the Israelites out of Egypt, was really going to help them now. Speaking on behalf of the Creator, the angel reassured Gideon that Jehovah truly was backing him.
Gideon wondered how it would be possible for him to “save Israel out of Midian’s hand.” The answer he received was direct: “Because I will be with you,” said Jehovah, “you will strike down Midian as if they were one man.” No doubt still wondering just how this would work out, Gideon sought a sign. Notice that in this conversation there is no question but that Gideon viewed Jehovah as a real Person.
What happened next strengthened Gideon’s faith and brought him closer to God. Gideon prepared a meal and served it to the angel. When the food was miraculously consumed by fire at the touch of the angel’s staff, Gideon realized that the angel was indeed Almighty God’s (YHWH’s) representative. Alarmed, Gideon exclaimed: “Alas, Sovereign Lord Jehovah, for I have seen Jehovah’s angel face-to-face!” (Judg. 6:17-22) [NWTr] But did that encounter erect a barrier between Gideon and his Almighty God (YHWH) ? Certainly not! The opposite occurred. Gideon came to know Almighty God (YHWH) in such a way that he felt at peace with God. We know this from the name given to the altar that Gideon erected at that place—“Jehovah-shalom.” That name means “Jehovah Is Peace.”

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY [for Friday]
But you, O Israel, are my servant, You, O Jacob, whom I have chosen, The offspring of Abraham my friend, Isaiah 41:8 [New World Translation Revised: NWTr]
Almighty God (YHWH) referred to the patriarch and ancestor of the Israelites as “Abraham my friend.” “O our God, did you not drive away the inhabitants of this land from before your people Israel and then give it as a lasting possession to the offspring of your friend Abraham?” O our God, did you not drive away the inhabitants of this land from before your people Israel and then give it as a lasting possession to the offspring of your friend Abraham? (2 Chronicles 20:7) [NWTr] also calls Abraham a friend of God. What was the basis for that faithful man’s enduring friendship with his Creator? It was Abraham’s faith. This was highlighted at James 2:21 – 23, “Was not Abraham our father declared righteous by works after he offered up Isaac his son on the altar? 22 You see that his faith was active along with his works and his faith was perfected by his works, 23 and the scripture was fulfilled that says: “Abraham put faith in Jehovah, and it was counted to him as righteousness,” and he came to be called Jehovah’s friend.” [NWTr]
Abraham’s descendants who became the nation of ancient Israel originally had Jehovah as their Father and Friend. Sadly, however, they lost their friendship with God. Why? Because they failed to keep exercising faith in Jehovah’s promises.

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY [for Saturday]
And Mary said unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? Luke 1:34 [American Standard Version; ASV]
Mary, the mother of Jesus (Yeshua) was puzzled when an angel told her at Luke 1:28 to 33, “And he came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favored, the Lord is with thee. 29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this might be. 30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favor with God. 31 And behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. 32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Most High: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33 and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.” [ASV] as she was NOT having sexual relations with any man. The use of the work ‘know’ here is the ancient way of speaking about sexual relations. However, the angel went on to say, “And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee: wherefore also the holy thing which is begotten shall be called the Son of God. 36 And behold, Elisabeth thy kinswoman, she also hath conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her that was called barren. 37 For no word from God shall be void of power. 38 And Mary said, Behold, the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.’ (Luke 1:35 to 38, [ASV] ). In fact, Joseph to whom she was betrothed at the time thought about breaking his betrothal when he found that she was pregnant, for details see Matthew 1:19 to 25.
The above clearly shows that at the time of Jesus’ birth, Mary was a virgin, but she did not remain a virgin after his birth as Jesus’ had brothers and sisters (i.e., half brothers and sisters as his Father was Almighty God, and their father was Joseph.) This is shown at Matthew 13:55 to 57, “Is not this the carpenter’s son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joseph, and Simon, and Judas? 56 And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things? 57 And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honor, save in his own country, and in his own house.” [ASV].

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY [for Sunday]
Now faith is assurance of things hoped for, a conviction of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1 [American Standard Version; ASV]
To win Almighty God’s (YHWH’s) approval we must have faith and must do as he directs. This reality is made clear throughout the scriptures. When the nation of ancient Israel exercised faith in him, he gave them protection against their enemies, but when they lacked faith and obedience, he gave them up to their enemies.
Noah proved faithful and followed Almighty God’s (YHWH’s) directions as testified to at Hebrews 11:7 [ASV], “By faith Noah, being warned of God concerning things not seen as yet, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; through which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.” Also, Abraham exercised faith at testified to at Hebrews 11:8 [ASV], “By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed to go out unto a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.” We today must exercise faith and follow His guidance as found in his inspired word, the Bible.

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY [for Monday]
The two will be one flesh.—Matthew 19:5.
Marriage is a relationship that requires a high level of commitment. Two people who merely live together without getting married can never enjoy real security; neither can their children. But partners who are committed to each other in honorable marriage have an impelling Scriptural reason for striving to resolve their difficulties with love when problems arise. (Matt. 19:6; 1 Cor. 13:7, 8; Heb. 13:4) In Bible times, people benefited from having binding contracts in business and employment. (Matt. 20:1, 2, 8) Today, the same holds true. For example, we benefit from having a binding written agreement, or written contract, before we begin a business venture or start working as an employee in a company. Hence, if commitment enhances relationships such as friendship, marriage, and employment, how much more will making an unreserved dedication benefit you in your relationship with Jehovah!

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY [for Tuedsay]
The dragon grew wrathful at the woman, and went off to wage war with the remaining ones of her seed, who observe the commandments of God and have the work of bearing witness to Jesus.—Rev. 12:17.
The apostle John saw an “angel flying in midheaven, and he had everlasting good news to declare as glad tidings to those who dwell on the earth.” (Rev. 14:6) Jehovah’s servants are thus assured of angelic backing as they preach the good news of the established Kingdom despite the Devil’s vicious opposition. Today, angels do not lead us to honesthearted ones by speaking to us as an angel spoke to Philip and directed him to the Ethiopian eunuch. (Acts 8:26-29) However, many modern-day experiences give evidence that angels behind the scenes are supporting our Kingdom-preaching work and guiding us to those “rightly disposed for everlasting life.” (Acts 13:48) How important it is, then, to share in the ministry regularly!—John 4:23, 24.

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY [for Wednesday]
The spirit and the bride keep on saying: “Come!”—Rev. 22:17.
The spirit, working through the anointed bride class, is extending this invitation regarding life’s water. If you have accepted the call to “come!” are you determined to say, “Come!”? What a privilege it is to be able to share in this lifesaving work! This vital work is now being accomplished under the guidance of holy spirit. We read how the holy spirit was involved in the first century in opening up new territories for missionaries. The apostle Paul and his companions were “forbidden by the holy spirit to speak the word in the district of Asia”; nor were they permitted to go into Bithynia. We do not know exactly how the spirit prevented their going into those places, yet it is clear that the spirit led Paul into the vast field of Europe. He received a vision of a Macedonian man pleading for help. (Acts 16:6-10) Today, Jehovah’s spirit is likewise directing the worldwide preaching.

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY [for Thursday]
Let the sayings of my mouth and the meditation of my heart become pleasurable before you, O Jehovah.—Ps. 19:14.
Today, many simply do not want to hear what the Bible says. If we are to persevere in speaking the word of God, it is important that we study the Scriptures in a manner that allows us to absorb their message fully. Regularity—not a hit-or-miss approach—should mark our study habits. How important it is that we take time to meditate on what we read, so that Bible truths sink deep down into the heart! Surely, we should strive to improve the quality of our personal study. Another way to benefit from Jehovah’s holy spirit is to “consider one another to incite to love and fine works, not forsaking the gathering of ourselves together.” (Heb. 10:24, 25) Exerting ourselves to be in regular attendance at Christian meetings, listening carefully, and applying what we learn are fine ways to be guided by the spirit.

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY [for Wednesday]
Love never fails.—1 Cor. 13:8.
Love is a basic human need. Yet, genuine love of God and neighbor is woefully lacking. We see happening what the Bible foretold about these last days. Men are “lovers of themselves, lovers of money, . . . lovers of pleasures rather than lovers of God.” (2 Tim. 3:1-5) God’s Word warns us against misguided love. And the Bible describes what happens when such love takes root in one’s heart. (1 Tim. 6:9, 10) Though Demas was associated with Paul, Demas turned to loving what the world offered. (2 Tim. 4:10) The apostle John warned Christians against this very danger. (1 John 2:15, 16) Loving the world and its transitory things and ways is not compatible with loving God and what originates with him. We are no part of this world, though we are still living in it. Thus, we have the challenge of avoiding the world’s distorted view of love. It is vital that we not let ourselves be trapped by misguided or perverted love.
