Re: Scripture of the Day

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY [Wednesday]

“No single witness may convict another for any error or any sin that he may commit. On the testimony of two witnesses or on the testimony of three witnesses the matter should be established.  Deuteronomy 19:15  [New World Translation Revised: NWTr]

Hear the testimony of witnesses. The statements of witnesses were vital to an investigation.   God’s Law stipulated that there be adequate witnesses and/or evidence so as to avoid errors.   To the witnesses, God’s Law commanded: “You must not spread a report that is not true. Do not cooperate with a wicked one by becoming a malicious witness” (Exodus 23:1,  [NWTr])

Re: Scripture of the Day

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY [Thursday]

What is right, what is right, shalt thou pursue,––that thou mayest live, and possess the land, which, Yahweh thy God, is giving unto thee.  Deuteronomy 16:20  (Rotherham Bible)

Since such travesties can arise in any legal system, the Bible urges judges to pursue true justice.   Where judges follow that injunction, citizens benefit.   God’s Law gave ancient Israel a legal system based on impartiality and fairness. Let us look at that Law to see whether “A Rock! faultless his work, For, all his ways, are just,––A GOD of faithfulness and without perversity, Right and fair, is he!” (Deuteronomy 32:4  (Rotherham Bible))

People’s interests are served when jurists are competent, fair, and above corruption. God’s Law to Israel placed a high value on judges of that caliber.  Early in the wilderness trek, Moses was told to look for “Thou thyself, therefore, shalt look out, from among all the people––men of ability, reverers of God, men of fidelity, haters of extortion,––and place them over them as rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.   So shall they judge the people at any time, and it shall be, all the great matters, shall they bring in unto thee, but, all the small matters, shall, they themselves, judge,––so, lighten thou the burden for thyself, and let them bear it with thee.” to serve as judges. (Exodus 18:21, 22,  (Rotherham Bible) )   Forty years later, he reemphasized the need for “Set forth, for you––men wise and discerning, and known to your tribes,––that I may appoint them to be heads over you.”  (Deuteronomy 1:13-17.,  (Rotherham Bible) )

Re: Scripture of the Day

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY [Friday]

I will give you insight and instruct you in the way you should go. I will give you advice with my eye upon you.  Psalms 32:8  [New World Translation Revised: NWTr]

When parents watch their children play, they are often amazed by the inborn abilities the young ones have.   Can you confirm that from your personal experience?   One child may appear to have natural agility or athletic ability, while a sibling seems more at ease with board games or some art or craft.   But regardless of their children’s gifts, parents find pleasure in discovering their potential.

Jehovah too takes a keen interest in his earthly children. He sees his modern-day servants as ‘And I will shake all the nations, and the precious things of all the nations will come in; and I will fill this house with glory,’ says Jehovah of armies.  (Hag. 2:7,  [NWTr] )   They are precious particularly because of their faith and devotion.

Re: Scripture of the Day

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY [Saturday]

The judges will thoroughly investigate, and if the man who testified is a false witness and has brought a false charge against his brother, 19 you should do to him just as he had schemed to do to his brother, and you must remove what is bad from your midst.  Deuteronomy 19:18 – 19  [New World Translation Revised: NWTr]

Require honesty in court proceedings.   The penalty for lying in court in Biblical times, gave pause to all involved:   So if a man lied in court to take another’s inheritance, he stood to lose an equal amount. If he lied to have someone that he knew was innocent put to death, he would forfeit his own life.   This guideline was a strong motivation to speak the truth.

Re: Scripture of the Day

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY [Sunday]

And what great nation is there, that hath statutes and ordinances so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?  Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes saw, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life; but make them known unto thy children and thy children’s children;  Deuteronomy 4:8  [New World Translation Revised: NWTr]

To the Israelites, Moses posed this question above.  Indeed, no other nation enjoyed those benefits. Under the reign of King Solomon, who in his youth sought to carry out Jehovah’s laws, the people “lived in security” and enjoyed peace and prosperity, “Judah and Israel were as numerous as the grains of sand by the sea; they were eating and drinking and rejoicing. Solo·mon ruled over all the kingdoms from the River to the land of the Phi·listines and to the boundary of Egypt. They brought tribute and served Solo·mon all the days of his life. Sol?o·mon’s food for each day was 30 cor measures of fine flour and 60 cor measures of flour, 10 fattened cattle, 20 pastured cattle, and 100 sheep, besides some stags, gazelles, roebucks, and fattened cuckoos.  For he controlled everything this side of the River, from Tiph?sah to Gaz?a, including all the kings on this side of the River; and he enjoyed peace in every region, all around him.  Judah and Israel lived in security, everyone under his own vine and under his own fig tree, from Dan to Beer-sheba, all the days of Sol?o·mon”  (1 Kings 4:20 – 25,  [NWTr])

Regrettably, the Israelites eventually turned their backs on their God.  Through the prophet Jeremiah, God declared: “The wise have been put to shame. They have become terrified and will be caught.  Look! They have rejected the word of Jehovah, And what wisdom do they have?”  (Jeremiah 8:9,  [NWTr])    The result was that Jerusalem became “the bloodguilty city” full of “detestable things.” Finally it was brought to ruin and lay desolate for 70 years.—Ezekiel 22:2; Jeremiah 25:11.

Re: Scripture of the Day

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY [Monday]

Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.  Colossians 3:2  [authorized King James Bible; AV]

The first-century Christian congregation in Colossae was under attack!   Some within the congregation were creating divisions by promoting adherence to the Mosaic Law.   Others were advocating the pagan philosophy of asceticism, which involved extreme self-denial.   In counteracting these false teachings, the apostle Paul wrote an encouraging letter, cautioning the Colossians: “Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.”  (Colossians 2:8, [AV]).

If those anointed Christians focused their minds on “Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,”  (Colossians 2:20,  [AV]) they would be turning their backs on Jehovah’s provision for salvation. (Colossians 2:21-23)   In order to help them safeguard their precious relationship with God, Paul admonished them: “Keep your minds fixed on the things above, not on the things on the earth.” (Colossians 3:2,  [AV])   Yes, Christ’s brothers were to keep in mind their hope  of receiving the incorruptible inheritance that was ‘reserved for them in the heavens.’—Colossians. 1:4, 5.

Re: Scripture of the Day

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY [Tuesday]

Later Jehovah’s angel came and sat under the big tree that was in Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abi-ezrite. His son Gide·on was beating out wheat in the winepress in order to hide it from Midi·an.   Jehovah’s angel appeared to him and said: “Jehovah is with you, you mighty warrior.”   At this Gide·on said to him: “Pardon me, my lord, but if Jehovah is with us, why has all of this come upon us?  Where are all his wonderful acts that our fathers related to us, saying, ‘Did Jehovah not bring us up out of Egypt?’ Now Jehovah has deserted us and given us into Midi·an’s hand.”   Jehovah faced him and said: “Go with the strength you have, and you will save Israel out of Midi·an’s hand. Is it not I who send you?”   Gid?e·on answered him: “Pardon me, Jehovah. How can I save Israel?  Look! My clan is the least in Ma·nasseh, and I am the most insignificant in my father’s house.”   But Jehovah said to him: “Because I will be with you, you will strike down Midi·an as if they were one man.”   Judges 6:11 – 16  [New World Translation Revised: NWTr]

Many Bible accounts make it clear that Jehovah sees not only the good in his servants but also their potential.   For example, when Gideon was chosen to set God’s people free from Midianite oppression, he must have been stunned by the angel’s greeting: “Jehovah is with you, you mighty warrior.” It seems clear that at the time, Gideon felt anything but “mighty.”   He acknowledged his doubts and his own sense of insignificance. But as the ensuing conversation revealed, Jehovah certainly had a much more positive view of his servant than Gideon had of himself.

Jehovah trusted Gideon to deliver Israel because He had observed his skills. For one thing, Jehovah’s angel had noticed how Gideon threshed wheat with all his might.   Something else had caught the angel’s attention.   In Bible times, farmers usually beat out grain in an open area to take advantage of the wind, which would blow away the chaff. Surprisingly, Gideon was secretly threshing wheat in a winepress in order to conceal his meager harvest from the Midianites.   What a clever strategy!   No wonder that in Jehovah’s eyes, Gideon was more than a cautious farmer—he was a shrewd man. Yes, Jehovah saw his potential and worked with him.

Re: Scripture of the Day

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY [Wednesday]

Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet’s son; but I was a herdsman, and a dresser of sycomore–trees:
and Jehovah took me from following the flock, and Jehovah said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.  Amos 7:14 – 15  [American Standard Version; ASV]

In the case of the prophet Amos that Jehovah noticed the potential of one of his servants, even though he might have appeared to many to be rather insignificant or unassuming.   Amos described himself as a raiser of sheep and a nipper of sycamore figs—a variety regarded as food for the poor.   When Jehovah appointed Amos to condemn the idolatrous ten-tribe kingdom of Israel, some Israelites might have thought that he was a poor choice.

Amos came from a remote village, but his knowledge of the customs and rulers of his time gave evidence that he was not ignorant.   He was likely well-informed about conditions in Israel, and he may have been knowledgeable about neighboring nations as a result of his dealings with traveling merchants. (Amos 1:6, 9, 11, 13; 2:8; 6:4-6)   Some Bible scholars today credit Amos with good writing skills.   Not only did the prophet choose simple and powerful words but he made good use of parallelism and wordplay.  Indeed,Amos’ bold response to the corrupt priest Amaziah confirmed that Jehovah had chosen the right person and could use his abilities that might not at first seem obvious.—Amos 7:12, 13, 16, 17.

Re: Scripture of the Day

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY [Thursday]

He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.  Matthew 28:6  [authorized King James Bible; AV]

NOT many days after Jesus died, the apostle Peter faced a formidable and hostile group of men. They were powerful Jewish religious leaders—the very ones who had orchestrated Jesus’ death. The men demanded an explanation.   Peter had healed a man who had been lame from birth, and they wanted to know by what power or in whose name Peter had done this.   The apostle courageously answered: “And it came to pass on the morrow, that their rulers, and elders, and scribes,  6  And Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem.  7  And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name, have ye done this?  8  Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel,  9  If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole;  10  Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.” (Acts 4:5-10.  [AV] )

Earlier, Peter had fearfully denied Jesus three times. (Mark 14:66-72)   What accounted for his courage now that he was before the religious leaders?    Holy spirit played a vital role, but so did Peter’s certainty that Jesus had been resurrected.

Re: Scripture of the Day

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY [Friday]

And it came to pass after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so sore, that there was no breath left in him.  18  And she said unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son?  19  And he said unto her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into a loft, where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed.  20  And he cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son?  21  And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child’s soul come into him again.  22  And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.  23  And Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him unto his mother: and Elijah said, See, thy son liveth.  24  And the woman said to Elijah, Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in thy mouth is truth.  1 Kings 17:17 – 24   [authorized King James Bible; AV]

That the dead could live again was not a new concept to  Jesus’ (Yeshya’s) apostles; resurrections had occurred before they were born.   They knew that God had empowered the prophets Elijah and Elisha to perform such miracles.  (2 Kings 4:32-37)   A dead man had even come to life when his body was thrown into a grave and it touched the bones of Elisha. (2 Kings 13:20, 21)   The early Christians believed these Scriptural accounts, even as we believe that God’s Word is true.

Very likely, all of us have been greatly moved by reading accounts of the resurrections that Jesus performed. When he restored a widow’s only son to life, she must have been astonished. (Luke 7:11-15)   On another occasion, Jesus resurrected a 12-year-old girl. Imagine the joy and wonder of her previously grief-stricken parents when their daughter was brought back to life! (Luke 8:49-56)   And how onlookers must have been thrilled when they saw Lazarus step from the tomb alive and well!—John 11:38-44.
